Director of Development
Brain Science Foundation
Wellesley, MA
www.brainsciencefoundation.org

The Brain Science Foundation (BSF) is a nonprofit, supporting organization dedicated to finding a cure for meningioma and other primary brain tumors and to advancing the understanding of brain function as it relates to these tumors.  The Foundation supports basic and clinical research, promising new treatments, and opportunities to improve the quality of patient care.  Steven R. Haley and his wife, Kathleen Haley, established the BSF in 2002 following Steven’s treatment for meningioma in 1997.  Steven Haley, who now runs his own diversified asset-management company, believed research and treatment could be further accelerated with more purposefully managed financial support that places high requirements for performance, timetables, and results upon scientists and doctors.  The Foundation was established with an initial gift of $5 million to support research led by Peter Black, M.D., Ph.D., chairman of Neurosurgery at the Brigham & Women’s Children’s Hospitals.  This year, approximately 13,000 people in the U. S. will be diagnosed with a meningioma, which accounts for approximately 30 percent of all primary brain tumors.

The BSF has a strategic advantage rooted in the depth of experience and entrepreneurial spirit embodied in its boards.  Reporting to the Board Chair and working closely with the Development Committee, the Director of Development is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive development program.  S/he will be charged with broadening support for the annual fund, creating and implementing a gala event, and cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual and corporate major gifts.  This is a special opportunity for an experienced and motivated professional to have a significant impact on people’s lives and to assist in a cutting edge approach to finding a cure for meningioma and other primary brain tumors.

Chief Development Officer
Prize4Life

Cambridge, MA
www.Prize4Life.org

Prize4Life is a results-oriented nonprofit founded to accelerate ALS/MND research by offering substantial prizes to scientists who solve the most critical scientific problems preventing the discovery of an effective ALS/MND treatment. It is uniquely positioned to offer ALS/MND prizes because its brings together existing ALS nonprofits, academia, and industry – all working towards an ALS/MND treatment.

The Prize4Life concept is inspired by other prize awards for stimulating research, such as the X-Prize for commercial space travel and DNA-decoding, the U.S. government’s H-Prize for hydrogen renewable energy, and Eli Lilly’s venture, InnoCentive, which outsources difficult R&D problems to a distributed network of scientists using prizes. The use of prizes removes the largest impediments to industry’s involvement in ALS/MND providing the right incentives for the right academic ideas to be taken outside of the laboratory and commercialized for ALS/MND patients. The prizes act as a “lighthouse” for all of ALS/MND research – directing scientists to focus on solving the ALS problems most critical to discovering an effective treatment.
